When it comes to DIY projects in Mississippi, you’re probably not looking for full-size commercial equipment. For everything from grading a driveway, clearing brush, digging drainage, and prepping for concrete, the right equipment makes all the difference.

John Deere’s compact equipment–compact utility tractors and compact construction equipment–is more than enough to handle most homeowner’s and farmer’s DIY projects. Here, we’re breaking down some of the most versatile compact equipment for DIY projects in Mississippi.

Types of Compact Equipment

When we talk about compact equipment, we’re talking about smaller-sized machines designed to better suit residential and diversified work, when a full-sized machine is simply too much. Here’s a quick breakdown of some DIY-focused compact equipment:

Compact Tractors

For residential, homesteading, and small farming DIY projects, we typically suggest looking at the 1 Series and the 3 Series. These are implement-driven tractors who earn their keep from their versatility. With a three-point hitch, mid-PTO, and front loader compatibility, they excel at a very wide range of tasks.

Compact Construction Equipment

Here, we’re looking at mini excavators, compact track loaders, skid steers, and compact wheel loaders. These machines are designed to take on more than just construction work–they’re purpose-built for digging, lifting, hauling, and much more. While they’re more efficient on the earthmoving side of the job, they lack the implement compatibility and versatility that a standard compact tractor offers.

For most DIYers, a compact tractor is simply a better fit for the job with a wider range of capability. Compact construction equipment makes sense if your project requires serious digging or material volume–like pond digging and large landscaping projects.

John Deere 1 Series (23-25 HP)

John Deere’s 1 Series is made up of two models: the 1023E and 1025R. This is the perfect starting point for most homeowners and smaller property owners with modest workloads. Up to 5 acres, the 1 Series–especially the 1025R–handles basic lawn maintenance, light grading, tilling projects, and light loader work.

The 1 Series may not be sufficient for all DIY projects. In Mississippi, the heavy clay soil can be unforgiving. If your project requires serious tilling, heavy brush clearing, or anything requiring sustained PTO work, it may be time to upgrade to a higher horsepower.

Best for: Basic lot maintenance, light tillage, grading, small landscaping projects

John Deere 3 Series (25-46 HP)

Best for: Heavy rotary cutting and brush clearance, tilling clay soils, sustained loader work, larger property maintenance
